History
It was the dream of a young
Dutch immigrant to grow quality grapes and produce truly
outstanding wines.
After his arrival in the United
States shortly after World War II, John Van Ruiten
settled in the Lodi area. His desire to have his own
land was quickly realized when in the early 1950's and
with his personal "sweat equity", John bought his first
vineyard property. He then planted Zinfandel vines and
began growing wine grapes in the Lodi Appellation.
Five decades later, the Van
Ruitens farm over 800 acres of wine grapes, with only
their very best fruit destined to carry the family name.
After more than fifty years, their ambition became a
reality as the Van Ruiten Family Winery was built just
prior to the 2000 harvest. Three generations of the Van
Ruiten family now work together to tend the vineyards
and manage their new winery. The Van Ruitens believe
that hard work and an uncompromising commitment to top
quality are the cornerstones of their business.
The Vision of John Sr.
The Van Ruiten story began with
an American dream-hard work in the face of adversity and
a drive to make something special.
Shortly after World War II, John
Van Ruiten Sr. arrived in the United States and settled
in the rich farmlands of the Lodi area. As a young Dutch
immigrant, he had a dream of growing quality grapes and
producing truly outstanding wines. His desire to have
his own land was realized in the early 1950's when,
prodded by a friend and local banker, John bought on a
handshake the "Happy Holmes Dairy." He then made a
sharp-eyed purchase of an old Zinfandel vineyard. With
large amounts of "sweat equity", he planted additional
Zinfandel vines and began growing wine grapes in the
Lodi Appellation. Five decades later, the Van Ruitens
farm approximately 1,000 acres, with only their very
best fruit destined to carry the family name.
John's first fields of Zinfandel
vines remain part of the estate to this day; however the
surrounding landscape is quite different. Once known
strictly as a grape growing district serving the major
Napa Valley Winemakers. Lodi has become a world-class
winemaking region in its own right. Large wineries and
intimate tasting rooms are now found along Lodi's
country roads, and are known among cognizant oenophiles
the world over as the secret home of some of
California's best wine-especially Old Vine Zinfandels,
and in Lodi, Zinfandel is King.

Van Ruiten Winery
Mid-way between the Sierra
Foothills and San Francisco Bay Delta, vineyards such as
those owned by the Van Ruiten Family profit from the
ideal delta influenced climate (cool afternoon breeze)
that produce ripe full-flavored Zinfandels. Before
settlement, the San Joaquin Valley was often an inland
sea after winter rains and spring snow melt. The
resulting flood drainage and soil deposits surrounding
Lodi left a rich soil that drains easily, producing
one-of-a-kind harvests.
For 50 years, the grapes grown
in the Van Ruiten vineyards were harvested and shipped
to other wineries every summer. The family wanted to
branch out into winemaking, and in 1999 the first
varieties of the Van Ruiten wines went into production.
Among the most memorable and lasting first wines was a
Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz blend that remains one of the
families most popular today, along with the famous Old
Vine Zinfandel, and the exceptional Chardonnay.
In 2000, less than a year after
kicking off its first season of winemaking, the Van
Ruiten family opened a state-of-the-art winery among
their vineyards along Highway 12. The following year saw
an addition of a tasting room, which allowed thirsty
travelers to sample the winery's growing list of award
winning wines. Soon a growing number of local boutique
wineries were knocking at the door, seeking custom crush
and winemaking services.
World class wine collectors, as
well as leading vintners, entrepreneurs, consumers and
wine lovers have quickly discovered the distinctiveness
and quality available through the old family vineyards
in Lodi. They now look for the Lodi and specifically the
Van Ruiten Family name when patronizing exclusive
establishments presenting the best wines for the world
to their customers.
Three generations of the Van
Ruiten family now work together tending the vineyards,
managing the winery and bringing the finest wines to
market. The Van Ruitens believe that hard work and an
uncompromising commitment to excellence are the
cornerstones of success today, and for their sixteen
grandchildren and the generations to come.

Vineyards
The Van Ruiten Family has
been growing grapes in the Lodi area for more than
50 years. What started out as a table grape
community slowly transitioned into the growing of
wine grapes in the early 1900’s. Among the
flourishing vines was the legendary Lodi Zinfandel.
John’s first acres of Zinfandel still remain as part
of the estate today. These Zinfandel vines are
among the oldest, most historic and shyest bearing
vines. Our newest addition in 2007 was the planting
of our 40 acre Primitivo vineyard. This red
varietal, also known as Zingarello, is genetically
related to California’s Zinfandel. It originated
and is still mainly grown in Southern Italy, but it
is starting to make its way around the world.
Throughout the last five
decades the farming practices have changed with the
introduction of new technology and eco-friendly
farming techniques. In an effort to move in the
direction of Sustainable Farming Practices we
erected nesting boxes for owls throughout our
vineyards. The owls that reside in these boxes help
keep the rodent population down without the use of
poisons in the soil. Over the course of the last
few years, thanks to the owls, the rodent population
is under control without the use of pesticides.
Though farming practices have changed, the motto has
stayed the same. The family has prided itself in
the uncompromising commitment to producing top
quality grapes and passing knowledge down from
generation to generation, while sharing newly
learned growing practices.
After five decades the
family farms an estimated 1000 acres of wine grapes,
with only their best fruit destined to carry the
family name. All of the fruit that enters the
winery for Van Ruiten Vineyards has been picked by
hand at its perfect ripeness and gently pressed to
preserve the delicacy and purity of the fruits rich
flavors. Three generations of the Van Ruiten family
now work together tending the vineyards, managing
the winery and envisioning a future for their ever
growing cellar and tasting room.

 CHARDONNAY
Aromas of sweet
pineapple, peach and apricot blend together with barrel aromas
of fig, honey and vanilla finishing with hints of white peach.
Our "Chard" was hand picked and gently squeezed to allow the
natural fruit character to shine through. Half of this
Chardonnay was fermented in stainless steel and the other half
was barrel fermented in small French oak barrels. They are then
blended together to enhance the complexity of body, flavor and
aroma.

 PINOT
GRIGIO
DOUBLE GOLD MEDAL
WINNER
Said to possess red wine capabilities on the dinner table, this
versatile varietal has also done an excellent job in enticing
the ever increasing number of "Anything but Chardonnay"
sentiments of wine drinkers. Brilliant in color and accentuated
with powerful aromas of peach blossom, pear, apple and subtly
enriched notes of apricot and melon, our Pinot Gris is packed
with tropical fruit and framed with a balanced, elegant
mouthfeel that allows the intense fruit flavors to shine

 CABERNET
- SHIRAZ BLEND
This European style
blend is full-bodied, yet very approachable and is loaded with
flavors of blackberries, cherries, currants, and plums; with a
lengthy finish and just a hint of oak
Among the most memorable
first wines produced by the Van Ruiten family, this blend
remains one of the families most popular today

 CABERNET
SAUVIGNON
Called "the noblest of
all grape varieties", along with its sister wine, Chardonnay,
Cabernet is the most marketable wine in the world. Our Cabernet
Sauvignon is hand-picked from John’s home ranch in Lodi,
California. These vines come from clone 337, which produces very
small berries and a rich wine in color and tannin. The inky
black hue color of this sumptuous Cabernet gives way to
expressive aromas of black cherry, currants, cassis and
allspice. Aging in French oak barrels softens this wine and
introduces hints of vanilla and cedar on the palate. This
Cabernet is food friendly and its ageability is guaranteed.

 OLD
VINE ZINFANDEL
*GOLD MEDAL, 91 pts*
After years of playing second fiddle to the so called "King"
Cabernet, Zinfandel has finally become trendy, and in Lodi is
the undisputed champion among champions.
This Zinfandel fruit was
hand selected from the first vineyard John Van Ruiten planted
over 50 years ago and is among the families most prized grapes.
Our 2006 Old Vine
Zinfandel is packed full of blackberry, cherry and blueberry jam
with barrel flavors contributing aromas of coffee, cedar, and
finishing with anise.
This wine has a jammy
quality with a big finish of age worthy tannin and a full body
that can be enjoyed over the years.

Only 500 cases produced from this sixteen
acre vineyard. If you’re big into Zin! This is a classic, boldly
styled Zinfandel and is not for the faint of heart. Big and
chewy, a concentrated ancient vine character. Ripe, delicious
and exuberant; rich with layers of wild cherry, blackberry, and

 "SIDEWAYS"
RESERVE ZINFANDEL
Happy
Holme Vineyard :
79% Zinfandel, 21% Petite Sirah
Drawn primarily from a wide selection of our
oldest, most historic and shyest-bearing Zinfandel blocks. The
2006 "Sideways" Reserve Zinfandel shows wonderful dusty
raspberry, blackberry, currant and walnut, with roasted coffee
characters. Aging in new wood has lent this wine a subtle
vanilla quality that nicely complements the explosive fruit
notes.
Individual lots of Zinfandel were harvested separately
according to ripeness and balance of acidity. The wines were
pressed off their skins at dryness and racked gently beforebeing
laid down to a complement of French oak cooperage for 15 months
— approximately 20% of barrels were new.

 PETIT
SYRAH
Today’s wine drinkers
have discovered the distinct characteristics of this varietal;
dark hues, exotic aromas of allspice, plums, and green tea, with
flavors of black cherries and ripe plums.
Exhibiting generous
tannins and a lengthy finish, this Petite Sirah should benefit
from several years of aging

 PINOT
NOIR
Dark ruby color moving
to garnet, the wine displays red cherry, spice, vanilla and
caramel reminding me of a beautiful cherry flambé.
Ripe red fruit, vanilla,
cedar, and toasted butterscotch give the wine a long finish.
Fine tannins carry the
finish currently and should mellow with time.
